Dakshina to the great teacher of the great archer Eklavya (महान धनुर्धर एकलव्य की महान गुरू दक्षिणा )

Gurus have had a special place in our country since ages.  There have been many great gurus in our country who have provided good and promising students to our country.  But today here we are talking about such a disciple who wasted his life on the orders of his Guru.

 We are talking about Eklavya, the son of Nishadraj Hirandhanu, came to Hastinapur one day and prostrated at the feet of Dronacharya, the best master of archery of that time, Dronacharya, the scripture guru of Pandavas and Kauravas.  When Acharya Drona asked him the reason for coming, he prayed and said, "I have come to learn archery by staying near your holy feet."

Acharya Dronacharya got confused after hearing this.  At that time Kauravas and Pandavas were children and Acharya Dronacharya was teaching them.  A Bhil child got education with the princes, it was not accepted by the princes and it was not in accordance with their dignity.  So he said son Eklavya, I am sorry that I cannot give arms training to a twin child.

 Eklavya had considered Dronacharya as his Guru in his mind, how could it even occur to him to feel anger or blame after listening to anything that he considered a Guru?  He prostrated in front of Acharya and said God, I have considered you as Gurudev, I only want your grace.

 The boy Eklavya did not go home after returning from Hastinapur, he went to the forest and there he made a clay idol of Guru Dronacharya.  He would pray to the idol of Gurudev and engage in the practice of archery.  Month after month passed like this, Eklavya's practice continued uninterrupted and he became a great archer.

 One day, with the permission of Acharya Drona, all the Kauravas and Pandavas went out in chariots to play the prey of violent animals.  Coincidentally, a dog wandering with them reached Eklavya and started barking seeing Eklavya, who was black in color and had a strange base.  He was practicing at that time.  Seeing the barking of the dog obstructing the practice, he closed the dog's mouth by shooting 7 arrows.  The dog reached the princes running.  Everyone saw with surprise that the dog was not hurt anywhere by the arrows, but the arrow was stuck in its mouth in such a way that the dog could not bark.       

Arjun was very surprised to see this skill.  On his return, he told the whole incident to Guru Dronacharya ji and said that Gurudev you had given a boon that you will make me the greatest archer on earth, but even I do not have that much skill.

 Dronacharya reached Eklavya's ashram with Arjuna. Seeing the Acharya, Eklavya fell at his feet.  Acharya Drona asked Eklavya that from whom did you get such excellent knowledge of archery.

 Eklavya folded hands and humbly said, Lord, I am a slave of your holy feet.  He pointed to that clay statue of Acharya Drona. Dronacharya thought something and said, gentleman, won't you give me Guru Dakshina?  Lord Dronacharya said, I want the thumb of your right hand.

 If the thumb of the right hand is not there, then how can the arrow be fired?  But not even a single line of regret came on Eklavya's face.  He immediately cut off the thumb of his right hand and raised it in his hand and placed it in front of Gurudev.

 Dronacharya said with a full voice that son, there have been and will be many great connoisseurs of archery in the universe, but I bless you that the sun of your great sacrifice and devotion to Guru will remain immortal forever.                              

युगो युगो से हमारे देश में गुरुओं का एक विशिष्ट स्थान रहा है। हमारे देश में बहुत से महान गुरु हुए हैं जिन्होंने हमारे देश को अच्छे-अच्छे और होनहार शिष्य प्रदान किए हैं। लेकिन आज हम यहां पर एक ऐसे शिष्य के बारे में बात कर रहे हैं जिन्होंने अपने गुरु की आज्ञा पर अपना सर्वत्र लुटा दिया।

        हम बात कर रहे हैं निषादराज हिरण्धनु का पुत्र एकलव्य 1 दिन हस्तिनापुर आया और उस समय के धनुर्विद्या के सर्वश्रेष्ठ आचार्य पांडव और कौरव के शास्त्र गुरु द्रोणाचार्य जी के चरणों में दूर से ही साष्टांग प्रणाम किया। आचार्य द्रोण ने जब उससे आने का कारण पूछा तब उसने प्रार्थना पूर्वक कहा मैं आपके श्री चरणों के समीप रहकर धनुर्विद्या की शिक्षा लेने आया हूँ ।

         

यह बात सुनकर आचार्य द्रोणाचार्य संकोच में पड़ गए। उस समय कौरव तथा पांडव बालक थे और आचार्य द्रोणाचार्य उन्हें शिक्षा दे रहे थे। एक भील बालक राजकुमारों  के साथ शिक्षा पाय , यह राजकुमारों को स्वीकार नहीं होता और यह उनकी मर्यादा के अनुरूप भी नहीं था। अतः उन्होंने कहा बेटा एकलव्य मुझे दुख है कि मैं किसी द्विजेतर बालक को शस्त्र शिक्षा नहीं दे सकता।

              एकलव्य ने द्रोणाचार्य को मन ही मन गुरु मान लिया था जिन्हें गुरु मान लिया उनकी किसी भी बात को सुनकर रोष या दोष दृष्टि करने की बात ही मन में कैसे आती? उसने आचार्य के सम्मुख दंडवत प्रणाम की और बोला भगवान मैं तो आपको गुरुदेव मान लिया मुझे केवल आपकी कृपा चाहिए।

       बालक एकलव्य हस्तिनापुर से लौटकर घर नहीं गया वह वन में चला गया  और वहां उसने गुरु द्रोणाचार्य की मिट्टी की मूर्ति बनाई । वह गुरुदेव की मूर्ति की प्रार्थना करता और धनुर्विद्या के अभ्यास में लग जाता। महीने पर महीने ऐसे ही बीतते चले गए एकलव्य का अभ्यास अखंड चलता रहा और वह महान धनुर्धर हो गया।

           1 दिन समस्त कौरव और पांडव आचार्य द्रोण की अनुमति से रथों में बैठकर हिंसक पशुओं का शिकार खेलने निकले। संयोगवश इनके साथ एक कुत्ता भटकता हुआ एकलव्य के पास पहुंच गया और काले रंग के तथा विचित्र बेस धारी एकलव्य को देखकर भौंकने लगा। वह उस समय अभ्यास कर रहा था। कुत्ते के भौंकने से अभ्यास में बाधा पड़ती देख उसने 7 बाण चला कर कुत्ते का मुंह बंद कर दिया। कुत्ता भागता हुआ राजकुमारों के पास पहुंचा। सब ने आश्चर्य से देखा कि बाणों से कुत्ते को कहीं भी चोट नहीं लगी किंतु वह बाण आड़े तिरछे उसके मुंह में इस प्रकार फसे है कि कुत्ता भौंक नहीं सकता ।

                 अर्जुन इस कौशल को देखकर बहुत चकित हुआ। उन्होंने लौटने पर सारी घटना गुरु द्रोणाचार्य जी को सुनाई और कहा गुरुदेव आप ने वरदान दिया था कि आप मुझे पृथ्वी का सबसे बड़ा धनुर्धर बना देंगे किंतु इतना कौशल तो मुझ में भी नहीं है।

        द्रोणाचार्य अर्जुन को लेकर एकलव्य के आश्रम पर पहुंच गए आचार्य को देखकर एकलव्य उनके चरणों में गिर पड़ा। आचार्य द्रोण ने एकलव्य से पूछा कि तुमने धनुर्विद्या का इतना उत्तम ज्ञान किससे प्राप्त किया है

      एकलव्य ने हाथ जोड़कर नम्रता पूर्वक कहा भगवान मैं तो आपके श्री चरणों का दास हूं। उसने आचार्य द्रोण की मिट्टी की उस मूर्ति की ओर संकेत किया द्रोणाचार्य ने कुछ सोच कर कहा भद्र मुझे गुरु दक्षिणा नहीं दोगे? आज्ञा करें भगवान द्रोणाचार्य ने कहा मुझे तुम्हारे दाहिने हाथ का अंगूठा चाहिए ।

        दाहिने हाथ का अंगूठा ना रहे तो बाण चलाया ही कैसे जा सकता है? किंतु एकलव्य के मुख पर खेद की एक  रेखा तक नहीं आई। उसने तुरंत अपने दाहिने हाथ का अंगूठा काटकर अपने हाथ में उठाकर गुरुदेव के सामने धर दिया।

          भरे कंण्ठ से द्रोणाचार्य ने कहा की पुत्र सृष्टि में धनुर्विद्या के अनेकों महान ज्ञाता हुए हैं और होंगे किंतु मैं आशीर्वाद देता हूं कि तुम्हारे इस भव्य त्याग और गुरु भक्ति का सूयश सदा अमर रहेगा।
